What to Wear With Two Piece Formal Dress

Being a teenager, I have certainly experienced and seen "how not to wear a suit". Now it's time to fine-tailor our dress wardrobes so that we nail the basic men's suit every time we wear one. Before reading on, realize that detail orientation cannot be stressed enough. Everything in the big picture is completely comprised of details.

Before leaving your place in your suit, examine yourself in a front of a full-body mirror. Remember, only you will know if you can pull something off. So make sure the choices you make are the best ones.

1. Get everything custom tailored or as closely fitted as possible. On determining how good you will look, proper fit is the number one factor in a suit. Also look for a suit you can move in, something that's comfortable.

2. Color Coordination is key. Colors should be related, not identical. (Know the color wheel!) In addition, realize that coordination isn't all color; pieces of similar colors should be of contrasting fabrics, and patterns should be of contrasting sizes/scale. Proper color coordination can make your clothes stand out if it's too dull. Too flashy? Tone it down.

3. Wear your best dress shoes. Everyone will take you seriously if you wear good shoes. Ideally you want a pair that is both functional and stylish. Invest in quality but don't sacrifice proper fit and comfort. Shoes speak strongly about who you are and what your habits are like, so keep them clean and shiny.

4. Keep your collar crisp and straight. Nothing says, "I'm sloppy and lazy" like a flat, worn-out collar. Use collar stays to keep the shirt collar in place and make it look crisp.

5. Consider a pocket square. A pocket square allows men to express themselves and vary their look. Always wear one when you wear a suit or sport coat. The general guideline is that your pocket square should compliment the color of your tie.

6. You can wear a flower. There are many men who will dismiss this as feminine. Great men like soldiers, politicians, and even princes like Prince Harry wear this to formal events. The only rule to wearing a boutonniere is that you do not need a special occasion to wear this.

7. Invest on a luxury watch. A watch is a functional piece of men's jewelry but you can't wear the same watch on formal and casual events. Luxury watches are usually expensive, consider getting a versatile watch that seems like it can go with anything, from a t-shirt to a suit.

8. Half an inch of the shirt cuff should be visible beyond the jacket cuff. The important thing you need to remember is that the suit sleeve doesn't rise above the cuff entirely. This is another detail that makes you look much more put together.

9. Button Down Collar Shirts – Dress Up or Down? It can be worn without a tie although it is not completely flexible. Before you go to work – make sure you check what others are wearing. Do not wear a button down collared shirt with a double breasted suit. It would be a fashion faux pas to mix the informal collar with a dressy suit.

10. Wear a tie when it's appropriate and tie a thick, symmetrical knot. Don't buy a tie just because it looks great – buy it because it has the right proportion for your body and is of a color and pattern that works with your shirts and suits. In case you forgot, ties serve no functional purpose other than to impress or (unfortunately many times) screw up your fashion. When you wear one, the knot should be the same shape and size as your two collar points and it should have a dimple or pinch in the middle, not be flat.

Going for the tie-less look depicts a sleek, cool, and effortless for those who can pull off the look. If you wear one, then remove it at any point during the day: take it off in private, unbutton 1-2 buttons, and leave it off for the rest of the day.

Additional Tip: Bow Tie Style It highlights the fit and style of everything else you're wearing, especially the small details. If everything else fits impeccably and you are proud of every nook and cranny, wear a bow tie!
